Sofia glanced up from the trunk, where she was helping her friend pack. Unlike Chiara, whose folded clothes resembled melting chunks of gelato, Sofia could transform every tunic, skirt, and dress into a neat, flat, perfect square. âAre you sure you want to go?â
âItâll be for the best.â
âBut will they let you stay? Shouldnât you make sure before going to the palace carrying your luggage?â
âIâm pretty sure Iâll be able to find a position. And carrying the luggage isnât a problem.â
Although she didnât relish the idea of going alone, she had to do this. Making the journey from Luigiâs house was long and costly, and she couldnât find someone to accompany her every time. Staying at the palace meant that she could have more time to practice containing her strengthâwhich was more important than anything else. And she wouldnât endanger Marisaâs prized possessions anymore. Well, she might break something at the palace, but after seeing the Den and the courts surrounding it, she knew the palace would be better equipped than Luigiâs house.
Sofia pursed her lips, but all she did was shake out a towel, fold it gently, and place it on top of Chiaraâs clothes. âI donât know much about the palace, but promise me youâll be careful. Iâll visit you whenever I can, or you can come back for lunch. In case either of us is too busy, we can send a note. I need to know youâre safe and well.â
A warm feeling rose within her; Chiara squeezed her friendâs hand gently. âOf course. And donât you work too hard at the shop. If you catch a cold or get sick, Cristian will worry.â
Sofia blushed. âHeâs got enough in the bakery to worry aboutâ¦â she shook her head, as if banishing all thoughts of Cristian, and pushed the trunk to Chiara. âThat should be all. Check if you need anything else.â
Chiara gave a cursory glance and closed the lid. She was still in shock and frustration that she had broken Marisaâs plates, but a small part of her was relieved that she could leave. Sheâd had enough of Luigi and Marisaâs wary looks, seeing her like a terrifying monster. And another small part of her wasnât averse to getting more opportunities to see Leon, even though he didnât seem as friendly as he had been in Panola.
