Sofia glanced up from the trunk, where she was helping her friend pack. Unlike Chiara, whose folded clothes resembled melting chunks of gelato, Sofia could transform every tunic, skirt, and dress into a neat, flat, perfect square. “Are you sure you want to go?”

“It’ll be for the best.”

“But will they let you stay? Shouldn’t you make sure before going to the palace carrying your luggage?”

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to find a position. And carrying the luggage isn’t a problem.”

Although she didn’t relish the idea of going alone, she had to do this. Making the journey from Luigi’s house was long and costly, and she couldn’t find someone to accompany her every time. Staying at the palace meant that she could have more time to practice containing her strength—which was more important than anything else. And she wouldn’t endanger Marisa’s prized possessions anymore. Well, she might break something at the palace, but after seeing the Den and the courts surrounding it, she knew the palace would be better equipped than Luigi’s house.

Sofia pursed her lips, but all she did was shake out a towel, fold it gently, and place it on top of Chiara’s clothes. “I don’t know much about the palace, but promise me you’ll be careful. I’ll visit you whenever I can, or you can come back for lunch. In case either of us is too busy, we can send a note. I need to know you’re safe and well.”

A warm feeling rose within her; Chiara squeezed her friend’s hand gently. “Of course. And don’t you work too hard at the shop. If you catch a cold or get sick, Cristian will worry.”

Sofia blushed. “He’s got enough in the bakery to worry about…” she shook her head, as if banishing all thoughts of Cristian, and pushed the trunk to Chiara. “That should be all. Check if you need anything else.”

Chiara gave a cursory glance and closed the lid. She was still in shock and frustration that she had broken Marisa’s plates, but a small part of her was relieved that she could leave. She’d had enough of Luigi and Marisa’s wary looks, seeing her like a terrifying monster. And another small part of her wasn’t averse to getting more opportunities to see Leon, even though he didn’t seem as friendly as he had been in Panola.
